This is the first of two books by Efrat Shoham. She gives us and our kids a huge gift with each of the two books, each having different languages in different lands, a total of 30 in all. They are books that prompts us to think about other people and develop respect for everyone. Similarly, Noa Paran has gifted us with humorous drawings in this first book which are fun to look at and which highlight the lessons mentioned above.
The two show us how to say I love you in 15 different languages, Bulgarian, Lebanese, and more. They tell us where these places are and show us a map.
Israeli author Efrat Shoham is both writer and content editor and she comes by her interest in the literary realm by good influences - her father was a farmer and her mother – a teacher and librarian. Illustrated by Noa Paran, Efract Shoham’s first volume of 15 Ways To Say I Love You introduces many languages and a storyline just waiting for a child to put it into words. Why is the girl staring at the sky? What sort of dog? Where are the flowers? And why is she sad as she holds on to the toy? Each reading might produce a different tale, and each child might fill in details to change the path. But each image is love, and the final page, with Esperanto as the pleasing surprise, offers a family filled with affection and joy.
The text is simple and clear. The words, though foreign, will be easy to sound out—and a child might love to “help” an adult who has maybe lost the knack. The illustrations are invitingly clean and uncluttered, and the end page, with a world-map showing the language locations, is an enjoyably educational addition. 15 Ways To Say I Love You is the sort of book and child and parent might both treasure and return to over and again.
